Making the Arch - Arch Project

We officially began making the arch using plasticine and into the design we discussed on the previous class. We had different coloured plasticine to make the arch look more presentable and to fit into our jungle themed arch. We first made the small bricks and the columns for the arch using the grey plasticine and this was a team work as we all needed to make sure that the sizes of all the bricks are the same, except the keystone one. Getting the right thickness was important in the making of the arch because we do not want it to be too thick that it will be heavy but we also don't want it to be too thin that it will not hold the weight that will be put on top of it. This was a struggle and we had to change our thickness of the brick a couple of times because it would not hold the weight of the phones when we were testing.

Originally, we were going to use satay sticks for the false work but we ended up making a sausage-like shaped using plasticine as the false work and then build and place the bricks around the false work to support it for a while. We did not had the idea of using a sausage-like shaped as the false work until we realised that the arch would not stay up by itself first.

After putting the false work and build the arch around it, the arch could then hold itself and was able to balance. This was such a relief for the group because we struggled a lot of trying to get the arch to stand  by itself. We then tried putting some weight on top of the arch to see if it could hold the compression of at least 2 phones -it did not work. After we tested it using 2 phones on top of the arch, we realised that it kept bending either left or right, therefore we added these reinforcements on the side and in front of the columns of the arch to support it more. After putting this and then putting the weights of the phone, it could hold the phone and therefore tested more using more phones and it could hold it.

We also decided to decorate the arch using green and yellow plasticine to match our jungle themed; therefore, we made vines and small flowers to make it look more aesthetically pleasing.

After the arch was finally done, we then had to test it in front of the class. My group's arch could hold a lot of phones at the end, 9 phones, before it started to fall and bend. After we tested it and put the 9 phones on top of it, we realised that the arch had deformed and bent forwards. This is why we added more plasticine on top of the arch way to support it more because the reinforcements on the side and in front and back of the arch was not enough.

After this project, it really improved my communicating skills with my teammates and also built my building and making skills. I also helped give ideas to the group that could be useful in a way that could make the arch more stronger, stable, and able to withstand the compression from the phones. I also improved my understanding of construction in building and how reinforcements are important to make the construction stronger.

Arch Project

Planning and Design:

The first day of the Arch project, we got into groups and we planned and design our arch. We had to think of how to make sure that the arch would be stable and can withstand the compression and tension of the plasticine on top of each other but, also make it look appealing in the same time. We decided to use satay sticks to make the curve of the arch and make it stand first and use plasticine to make the arch.

We have chosen to place the arch in a forest themed, therefore the arch would be coloured grey and brown with a little bit of green plasticine to show the perception of the vines in the forest. We also didn't want our arch design to be like everyone else's or something simple so we came up with a little bit of a different arch. Also, we decided that our arch would be on a wall to make it look more appealing.

This photo shows us planning our design. We also have a rough idea on the measurements. I really am looking forward to doing this project because I really like designing and also working in groups. I think I have given a lot of ideas to the group as the design of the arch was partly my idea. I am looking forward to actually making the arch using plasticine and also to become much more closer with my teammates.

Human Sketch

This project was a group project and in my group, we had 5 people. I like group projects because it improves the relationship I have with my class members, also make new friends and also improve communicating skills. For this group project, we had to draw 1:1 scale of the model doing three different poses on butter paper. Since I was the smallest in my group, I volunteered to be the model for the group because it would be easier to draw 1:1 scale, fit three poses onto 5 butter paper, and do the measurements accurately.

There were many steps on making the human sketch on the butter paper. This project has really taught me how to work very well in a group; also taught me how communicating and planning is very important in group projects. However, I was not the leader of the group but I really wished I could be the leader for my next group project because I think that would really improve my skill of being a leader.

The first step after outlining the butter paper with red lines, I had to model different poses for my other teammates to take a picture and measure me. I stepped up and decided that I would be the model to be drawn, instead of hiding at the back of my group and not step up. I also helped decide what poses I should do so that the poses go from 'the wait' to 'the watch'.

We then started drawing onto the butter paper. I helped draw the poses onto the butter paper because I knew I could draw the poses well since I was the model and I know more of what I was posing. Also, I wanted to show my drawing skills to the group and show that I understand about proportion. However, we did struggle at some parts on drawing the model sketch, therefore I decided to lean against on the paper and so that my other teammates can roughly mark where my legs, knees, etc, are at.

The photo on the left shows the final piece of work after we drew all three poses onto the butter paper. Overall, I enjoyed doing this assignment because I like doing group work as it improves my relationship with my class members. Also, it helped me improve my communicating skills and also a bit of my leadership skills because I did also help lead my group and give my ideas.

Sleeping, Washing Dishes and Reading

For this assignment, I had to choose 3 activities from my previous assignment of the 12 Daily Activities and draw 5 other poses for each of the 3 activities. This assignment was a bit harder than the first assignment because it was difficult to find 5 different poses for each activity.

The 3 activities that I decided to choose were: sleeping, washing dishes and reading, because I thought there were many different poses I could draw and there were. For each activity also,  I had to take a photo of myself doing the pose and also do a plan and elevation view, either side or front. This was also harder than the first assignment which was related because the plan and elevation view has to be 1:20 scale.

Out of my three drawings, this is my favourite drawing because I like the 5 poses that I have drawn and also my plan and front elevation drawing is correct and proportionate to the 1:20 scale.

This is my second drawing, which is the sleeping poses. I am very proud also with my plan and elevation drawing but the 5 different poses, I could have done better and make it more creative.

This is my third drawing, which is washing dishes poses. I like the 5 different poses that I have drawn for this one but I am not proud of my elevation drawing. It is not 1:20 scale, it is too small and it is not proportionate. However, it did teach me to do it much better and also more careful for next time I do an elevation drawing.

What Do I Do Daily?

For my first assignment that I was given for this course, I had to draw 12 daily activities that I do daily. This was not a hard assignment to do for me because I enjoyed doing this assignment and also helped me know what I need to work on for my future assignments. This assignment however did take me a while to finish because I had to plan and think about the poses for each activity and make the poses very interesting and different from others.

After this assignment, I learned that I had to improved more and work on more with my proportion of the human body. Some of my drawings were not in proportion but after this assignment, I now know that I can improve myself and I will make my human sketches more proportionate for next time.

The photo shows my final piece of work that shows the 12 Daily activities with different activities and poses for each.
