Cement Wall Art

Our group had to design a wall art made out of cement. In the beginning, my group misunderstood the objective of the project as we thought that one group had to do just one wall art but we each had to do one and when we combine it, it will make a wall art together. We had an idea in the beginning but we had to come up with another idea  because we misunderstood. At the end, we came up with the idea of the galaxy and the planets, making some of the planets hallow, some covered in pebbles and some with string to create texture.

The next lesson we had to make our concrete ourselves, mixing the cement and the water together to create a good consistency to use and then pour it into the box that we made to create the wall art. This part was very tiring because we had to keep adding more cement or more water because sometimes it would have been too runny or too dry to pour it into the box. It was also a struggle because we had to make sure that the thickness of all 4 boxes are the same thickness. Some of the wall arts, we used a cap bottle, a cupcake cup onto the box first before pouring the cement to create a hallow hole for the planets.

We waited for the cement to half dry until we added more objects onto the cement art so we can push the object half way deep onto the cement art to create different thickness and sizes of the planets. Also, we added string and pebbles while the cement was drying to create more texture and give this affect of the orbits around the planets. We also rubbed two chalks together, different colours such as pink, white and yellow, to create more of a galaxy theme.

At the end, after it was dry and we took all the objects out, our cement wall art turned out really nice and looked like how our group imagined it. I really liked this project because it was creative and really fun playing with cement and making the different shapes and patterns. Perhaps for next time, we could've coloured the cement with pigment to create a more galaxy theme.
